This morning the USA mens hockey team went out against Slovakia. The USA team is made up entirely of NHL players so every face was familiar. There were also a bunch of NHL players on the Slovakian team including Zdeno Chara who captains the Boston Bruins. Chara is also the captain of the Slovakian team this year. Team USA came to play right from the puck drop. They got a lot of early chances but Slovakian goaltender Jaroslav Halak of the St. Louis Blues didn't let anything by him. Team USA did finaly score late in the first period. Defensemen John Carlson of the Washington Capitals took a drop pass from Phil Kessel of the Toronto Maple Leafs. After that he sniped a nice slap shot top corner to give the Americans the lead heading into the break. Heading into the second period, Slovakia needed a response. They got one from Tomas Tatar. The Detroit Redwing centermen picked up the puck at the USA blue line. After that he took a few strides and ripped a wrist shot top right. Team USA was quick to respond to this. Chicago Blackhawks forward Patrick Kane set up Canucks forward Ryan Kessler for a one timer (a slap shot at a moving puck). Ryan Kessler sniped it top corner to put team USA on top 2-1. Shortly after the Americans got another goal. St. Louis Blues forward T.J Oshie made a nice pass in front to Montreal Canadians forward Max Pachiorety. Jaroslav Halak made the first save but Paul Stasney of the Colorado Avalanche banged in the rebound. That was one of his two goals on the night. Team USA coasted through the rest of the game by adding three more goals. The final score USA 7 Slovakia 1. It was a great way to start out the tournament. Next up is team Russia on saturday.
